Manon Lescaut, Puccini’s third opera and first hit, is winsome, witty, effervescent with melody, with youthful hope and youthful tragedy. When played and paced as lusciously and racily as it was under Fabio Luisi at the Met on Friday night, Puccini’s genius displays its happiest bloom.
